Outdoor Classroom

Our "Outdoor Classroom" was developed with input from Child Development experts who have extensive knowledge both in research and a passion for the outdoor learning environment.

We believe that children are active learners. They use their whole bodies to explore, experiment, and solve problemss.

We believe that children need to experience challenging equipment and activities that will promote feelings of success, safety, and fun.

We believe that a child's development is optimized when they spend a significant amount of time participating in child-initiated activities that are teacher-supported.

We believe that children learn about and understand God through nature.

The following areas offer a glimpse into the world of discovery and exploration that the Outdoor Learning Classroom brings to life for the children, teachers, and community:

• Presents natural materials (logs, sticks, rocks) to enhance imagination for pretend play
• Utilizes uneven natural surfaces providing a physical skill building arena

• Fosters learning through self-initiation of play in a familiar setting
• Manifests sensory exploration with sand, dirt, water, and utensils; a place to get dirty Secret Garden
• Initiates a sense of "wonder" and has the opportunity for "what if?"
• Achieves engagement with nature, allowing body and mind to relax.

• Supports social/emotional interaction, building communication through projects and group activities
• Encourages hands on opportunity for creativity and building with large wooden blocks

• Connects a sense of refuge and imaginary play scenarios
• Fosters looking at nature through the lens of seasonal changes in a living tree

Our goal is to instill knowledge and confidence that when children play at Westminster, they are indeed, learning, growing, and understanding the world around them.
