The shape of our worship

Each Sunday we gather as one church. Every part of the service has a purpose, from the words and symbols we use to the music we sing.

A note as you read: this is not the Order of Worship for a particular Sunday. These are the elements that typically shape our liturgy. Most appear often, but not all of them are part of the same service, and each week’s bulletin holds that Sunday’s order.

Prelude: A time to calm our hearts and prepare for worship.
Welcome: Calls us together as one body and welcomes guests into our community.
Call to Worship: In word or song, this calls us to turn our attention to God. On some Sundays we open with a word of prayer for God's blessing on our worship, remembering that we stand in God's presence. On other Sundays, we will recite a prayer together.
Life Together: More than announcements, this is an invitation to plug into the life of the WPC community.
Scripture Reading: God’s Word is central to our worship, and each week we listen to Scripture read aloud as part of our shared life of faith.
Pastoral Prayer and the Lord's Prayer: Together we thank God, lift up the needs of our community and world, and pray the words Jesus taught us.
Music: Whether sung or played, traditional or contemporary, music responds to God's Word as prayer, offering, and a call to action.
Passing the Peace: We wish one another the peace of Christ by greeting our friends—both new and familiar.
Sermon: Scripture is proclaimed in the conviction that, through the Holy Spirit, Christ is present among us, offering grace and calling for our response.
Communion Sundays: On Communion Sundays, we confess our brokenness and our need for God's grace. We are reminded that God's grace is sufficient in Jesus Christ. After Communion, we recite the Apostle's Creed together, affirming our faith. At the Table we join with Christians across time and culture, remembering Christ and celebrating what God is doing among us. We share Communion on the first Sunday of every month. All people are welcome to come to the Table to receive the bread and cup or a blessing. We practice intinction, dipping the bread into the juice as a sign of our unity in Christ.
Offering: Tithes, offerings, and gifts are received as an act of worship and thanksgiving that reaches beyond our walls.
Doxology and Prayer for Offering: We sing words of glory and praise to God, and we give thanks for the talents, time, and treasure God has given to us.
Benediction: We are sent out to carry what we have heard into the week, reminded that God goes before us and walks with us.
Postlude: A closing musical offering that sends us out to carry worship into the world.
